eSIM or roaming in the USA? Costs on an Austrian plan compared

What Austrian networks charge in the USA

Published prices, checked on 22 Oct 2026, euros incl. VAT.

• A1: Roaming Pass per started GB; A1 says it is switched on automatically for every tariff signed since 24 June 2026, default data limit €60 (you can raise it). The A1 Roaming Datenwoche Welt (1 GB, 7 days, €9.90) also covers the USA according to A1, but costs more per GB than the Roaming Pass.
• Drei: Go (1 GB) and Go Select (5 GB) last 15 calendar days, up to 5 packages within 15 days. “Nordamerika Unlimited” (€35.00, 15 days) covers Canada, Mexico and the USA. For the USA, Drei’s footnote excludes overseas territories from the included units.
• Magenta: without a package €15.36 per MB; data roaming stops at €60. Travel packages depend on your tariff – check the roaming finder.

The EU rule behind this: according to the European Commission (Your Europe), “roam like at home” applies in the EU, in the EEA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and in Moldova and Ukraine. Other countries are not covered – operators may extend their offers voluntarily, and roaming outside the EU/EEA can be expensive. The USA, Canada and Mexico are not covered. Saily eSIM for the USA — snapshot from 22 Oct 2026

As listed on saily.com, in US dollars. Saily sometimes also offers shorter durations per GB size at slightly lower prices; we list the longest duration shown.

Unlimited plans (USA)

Saily says the unlimited plan includes 5 GB per day without a speed limit, then unlimited data at up to 1 Mbps.

Saily says the plan starts automatically when you arrive, as long as the eSIM is turned on and data roaming is enabled.

7, 14 or 30 days: costs compared

Data need at normal use (0.50 GB per day plus buffer, as in the eSIM calculator). Saily in US dollars, A1/Drei/Magenta in euros – we do not convert.

Drei for more than 15 days: one package mix per 15-day period (so two package mixes for 30 days). Magenta: at €15.36 per MB, about 4 MB already pass €60. A1 blocks at €60 by default – higher A1 totals only if you raise the limit.

What this means

• Little data (up to 1 GB): Drei “Go” or one A1 GB on the Roaming Pass – simple, no new eSIM.
• Drei customers with heavy use: “Nordamerika Unlimited” for €35.00 per 15 days is the option without counting GB – Canada and Mexico included.
• A1 and Magenta: from a few GB, a Saily fixed plan in US dollars is usually much cheaper; compare with your card’s exchange rate.
• USA plus Canada or Mexico: Saily’s North America regional plan covers all three countries.

Disclosure: TripUtils earns a commission if you buy Saily, Yesim or Airalo through our links (Yesim and Airalo via the Travelpayouts partner network). We have only checked Saily’s plans and the published A1, Drei and Magenta prices – we have not checked Yesim, Airalo or other eSIM providers’ prices and do not rate them here.

USA, Canada and Mexico: Saily North America (as of 21 Oct 2026)

Unlimited plans (North America)

Saily says the unlimited plan includes 3 GB per day without a speed limit, then unlimited data at up to 1 Mbps.
