Guide · as of 22 Oct 2026eSIM or roaming in Turkey? Costs on an Austrian plan compared
Turkey is outside EU roaming, so the data in your Austrian or German tariff does not simply carry over. Here is what A1, Drei and Magenta charge there as of 22 Oct 2026, what a Saily eSIM for Turkey costs, and which is cheaper for 7, 14 and 30 days.

7, 14 or 30 days: costs compared
Data need at normal use (0.50 GB per day plus buffer, as in the eSIM calculator). Saily in US dollars, A1/Drei/Magenta in euros – we do not convert.
| Trip | Planning size | A1 Roaming Pass | Drei (cheapest package mix) | Magenta, no package | Saily fixed plan | Saily Unlimited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | 5 GB | €24.50 | Go Select – €10.00 | over €60 (cut-off) | 5 GB – US$9.99 | 7 days – US$26.99 |
| 14 days | 10 GB | €49.00 | 2 × Go Select – €20.00 | over €60 (cut-off) | 10 GB – US$15.99 | 15 days – US$48.99 |
| 30 days | 20 GB | €98.00 | 2 × (2 × Go Select) – €40.00 | over €60 (cut-off) | 20 GB – US$22.99 | 30 days – US$71.99 |
Drei for more than 15 days: one package mix per 15-day period, data split evenly. Magenta: at €15.36 per MB, about 4 MB already pass €60, so the cut-off applies long before the planning size. A1 also blocks at €60 by default – higher A1 totals only if you raise the limit.
What this means
- Little data (up to 1 GB): Drei “Go” or a single A1 GB is simple and cheap – no new eSIM needed.
- More data: from a few GB, a Saily fixed plan in US dollars is usually much cheaper than the A1 Roaming Pass in euros; compare the table with your card’s exchange rate.
- Lots of video or hotspot use: Drei “Türkei Unlimited” (15 days) and Saily unlimited are the options without counting GB.
- Magenta without a travel package: avoid it in Turkey – pick a package in the roaming finder first, or use an eSIM.

Common questions
Does EU roaming apply in Turkey?
No. According to the European Commission, roam like at home applies in the EU, the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), Moldova and Ukraine – Turkey is not included.
How much is 1 GB of roaming in Turkey on A1?
€4.90 per started GB with the A1 Roaming Pass (zone 1, as of 22 Oct 2026). A1 uses Turkey as its own example. If your domestic tariff includes Turkey roaming units, those are used first.
Does Drei have an unlimited package for Turkey?
Yes: “Türkei Unlimited” for €25.00, valid 15 days, including Northern Cyprus (drei.at, 22 Oct 2026).
Does the Saily app work in Turkey?
Saily notes that access to its app may be limited in Turkey due to local restrictions. Buy and set up the eSIM before you travel.
Do I keep my phone number with an eSIM?
Yes, if you leave your home SIM on: calls and texts keep running over it (watch the voice roaming charges), data goes over the eSIM. Saily’s data plans are data-only; a phone number is a separate Saily product.
